Insensitve demonstration banned - football match postponed
Sunday, September 13, 2009

Luton Town FC have postponed a game planned for this Saturday in recognition of a potential disturbance in the Bury Park area where the anti-muslim English Defence League had planned to hold a demonstration this Saturday.

As readers of my site will know from my previous comments, I find the beliefs and behaviour of these demonstrators disgusting, but under most circumstances I also belive it is a clear right of freeborn British people to express their opinions and demonstrate.  But there is an appopriate time and place for making your opinion heard, and I actually support the government's decision to ban this demonstration because it was clearly planned to cause optimal offence and make trouble.  The EDF chose Bury Park during the Eid celebrations at the end of Ramadan for their demonstration. That would be like holding an anti-christian rally outside St Mary's on Christmas day.  How insensitve and stupid can you be - deliberately out to cause maximum offence to a largely peaceful group of people celebrating an important religious event!?!

I applaud the Football Club for making this difficult but sensible decision and wish all the residents of Bury Park and the Muslim community across Luton Eid Mubarak.
