Fight to save green belt widens
Sunday, October 11, 2009

Over the last week I have joined residents from both the East and West sides of the Luton South constituency in their various fights against proposed mass housing developments.

Last weekend I attended a dog show raising funds for the Keep East of Luton Green campaign group; and on Friday night I attended another packed meeting at Slip End Village Hall where local residents expressed in no uncertain terms their objections to proposals around the M1 to the West of Luton.

I have continually stressed that we need housing, but it needs to be the right scale in the right place (click here).  The best chance of saving our green belt, stopping unwanted development, and putting power back in the hands of local people to choose what development they want in their own local communities - is the election of a Conservative Government.

We have promised to scrap the regional development strategies and the imposed housing targets, to allow councils to protect green belt land currently identified for development, and to put development planning power back in the hands of local councils.  We would also provide financial incentives to encourage development where local people DO want it.

So... I can offer local residents not just my opinion on such matters, but a policy - and a policy that has a strong likelihood of being implemented next May when there is (finally) a general election.
