Several months ago I wrote this letter to Margaret Moran outlining why I believed she should stand down immediately as the MP for Luton South and trigger a by-election which I and others would fight.
Needless to say, Ms Moran ignored this letter and my request. Several months later, Ms Moran is still off sick, unwilling or unable to serve her constituents, but the local Luton & Dunstable Express newspaper has now decided to join my calls for a by-election. As indeed have all the other annouced candidates.
We have only a short window of opportunity to put pressure on this matter. In a few weeks time we will be so close to the general election that Gordon Brown and Labour party leadership could delay any by-election all the way to the actual general election which has to be by June 2010. But in the meantime, Luton South will continue to be without representation in Parliament and it is becoming increasingly clear that Ms Moran has no intention of returning to the job that she is still getting paid for. So please join the campaign the local newspaper is running, write to the local editors or sign the petition for Moran to go.
The situation is outrageous. More than 80% of you recently responded to my survey in whch you said local residents should have a right to recall MP's and trigger a by-election if they have misbehaved or brought shame on the constituency or themselves. I completely agree.
My comments in the local Luton and Dunstable Express are outlined, below, and a link to the story in the paper can be found here.
NIGEL HUDDLESTON (Conservative) said:
I HAVE been calling on Margaret Moran to resign and force a by-election since early May when the scale of her expense abuses became apparent and her position became untenable. Since then she has been off work and done absolutely nothing for the town, its people or its reputation.
Parliamentary correspondence and casework has been ignored, yet Ms Moran has happily taken her salary each month. Enough is enough.
Luton needs an MP who is involved in politics for what they can give, not what they can take.
We need an honest ambassador who can re-energise the town and make the best of its immense potential.
Another seven months is too long to go without a voice in Westminster. It is transparently clear that Ms Moran is either unwilling or unable to perform her parliamentary duties, which leaves just one honourable course of action: Resign… Now.
