Remembrance Sunday - Luton
Sunday, November 08, 2009

I was proud to join several hundred Lutonians this morning outside the Town Hall for the Remembrance Sunday Service organized by the British Legion.

I was joined by my son, Tyler, who joined me to watch the service, see the bands, and join in the two minutes silence at 11am - and he also helped me sell my final batch of poppies and raise much needed funds for the Royal British Legion poppy appeal.

The generosity of Lutonians has been truly amazing.  Many people put money in the box without taking a poppy and several people reached into their wallets and purses to pull out notes - even in the depths of a recession.

The realities of war were brought home to all of us this week when we heard the sad news of the death of one of our own:   A soldier from Luton was gunned down by a policeman he was training while serving in Afghanistan this week.  Warrant Officer Darren Chant was one of five soldiers shot dead on Tuesday in an incident at a police checkpoint.
