Party Chairman in Luton
Monday, January 04, 2010

Conservative Party Chairman, Eric Pickles MP, fired the starting gun for this year’s general election in Luton this morning when he revealed a new national poster campaign with a large picture of David Cameron with a caption saying:  “We can’t go on like this.  I’ll cut the deficit not the NHS” and a tag line of:  Year for Change.

Mr. Pickles was joined by local party supporters and the two Conservative Parliamentary Candidates for Luton: Nigel Huddleston (Luton South); and Jeremy Brier (Luton North).

Pollsters and bookies agree that the Conservatives are currently favourites to win both Luton seats.

Mr Pickles told the crowd of supporters who were braving the early morning winter cold that "It's day four of the election year and we're out here, while Labour MPs are pulling their duvets over their heads."
“The two Luton seats will be pivotal to the election campaign, helping determine whether David Cameron can secure a parliamentary majority.  We vitally need to win in Luton, and we've got a really good chance because we've got really good candidates."
“We are kicking off the election year with a clear commitment to sort out the economy and cut the deficit while protecting the NHS.”

Jeremy Brier said:
“The presence of the Party Chairman here today underlines the importance of Luton in determining the outcome of the general election.  In the coming weeks and months we will have several more visits by Shadow Cabinet members, following on from nearly a dozen visits by the shadow team last year, including David Cameron himself.
The NHS consistently comes near the top of the list of issues when we canvass and conduct surveys in Luton and it is important for people to know that the NHS will be safe in the our hands.”

Nigel Huddleston said:
“Eric Pickles came to Luton to send a very clear message:  The Conservatives are taking Luton very seriously and we are fighting to win.
All eyes will be on Luton at the upcoming general election because since 1951 the winning party in Luton South has gone on to form the government.  Lutonians will therefore be deciding not only who their local MP will be, but who will run the country.
If you want change, then vote Conservative. A vote for any other party or candidate risks five more years of Gordon Brown.”
