Free TV licences for over-75s

Thank you for getting in touch about the debate on free TV licences for the over-75s, which I attended and contributed to.

As you might be aware, in 2015, as part of a longer term funding settlement, it was agreed that the responsibility for the concession of free TV licences for people aged 75 and over would be transferred to the BBC from 2020. As of next year, it becomes the BBC's decision whether to continue the concession in its current form.

The BBC recently consulted on possible options for the future, citing the high cost of renewing the concession in its current form. This was an important step in order to ensure the BBC is aware of the public’s views on the subject. However, whilst the future of the concession is ultimately a decision for the BBC, the Government has been clear that it wants and expects the BBC to continue it.

I hope this provides you with some reassurance about the Government's position.

Thank you again for getting in touch.
