I was pleased to contribute to today’s House of Commons debate on assisted dying.
I’ve received hundreds - possibly thousands - of messages from constituents on all sides of this deeply personal issue. After much thought, I could not support this Bill.
Over the years, my views have shifted, shaped by the stories I’ve heard - from tragic experiences of suffering to lasting regret after supporting a loved one’s decision.
This was not an easy decision. But as I said in the chamber: no one side has a monopoly on compassion. I remain concerned that this Bill doesn’t yet meet the confidence threshold required for such a profound change.
I’ll continue to follow its progress closely.
