A statutory consultation is now open on proposals to reorganise local government in Worcestershire, which would affect how Droitwich, Evesham and Wychavon are governed in the future.
I would strongly encourage residents, town and parish councils, local businesses and community groups to take a few minutes to share their views.
My own view is that a two-unitary model for Worcestershire, covering the north and south of the county, is the right approach. Wychavon currently has one of the lowest council tax rates in the country, and I do not believe it would be fair for residents here to see those rates pushed up to match higher-charging areas elsewhere. I also have concerns that a single county-wide authority could place greater pressure on Wychavon’s countryside to meet housing needs from other areas.
Most importantly, any changes must ensure Wychavon gets its fair share of investment and growth, not just its share of the tax bill. A more local approach gives us the best chance of delivering that.
The consultation closes Thursday 26 March.
