The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has concluded its investigation into West Mercia Police and its involvement with Alfie Steele, prior to his tragic death in 2021. The investigation examined twenty separate incidents and has concluded that, whilst no officers had breached professional standards, the force “did not sufficiently train frontline officers to identify child abuse.
The IOPC report follows last year’s Local Child Safeguarding Practice Review (LCSPR), which highlighted a number of areas where improvements can be made and also identified eight key recommendations for change. After this report was published, I met with both the leadership team at Worcestershire Children’ Services and West Mercia Police to discuss these findings. Similarly, in light of this further report by the IOPC I will be contacting the Police and Crime Commissioner to discuss how we can build on the work which is already underway, to address the identified areas for improvement and ensure that such a horrific tragedy never happens again.
I would like to again extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to Alfie’s grandparents and all who loved him, for the unimaginable pain and suffering they have – and continue to – endure.
