Social Media Ban for Under-16s: Have Your Say

I want to hear your views on social media and the impact it is having on children and young people.

As Conservatives, we are rightly cautious about bans and heavy-handed regulation. But we also have to be honest about the scale of the problem we are facing. There is a growing mental health crisis among young people, and excessive use of social media is increasingly part of that picture.

Social media has brought real benefits, from staying connected to learning new skills. However, the downsides are becoming harder to ignore. Rising levels of anxiety and depression, sleep disruption, reduced face-to-face interaction, falling academic performance and declining self-confidence are all being linked to excessive screen time and social media use.

Research shows that many teenagers now spend around six hours a day on their phones outside of schoolwork, with some reporting they are online almost constantly.

That is why the Conservative Party has proposed an Australian-style ban on social media for under-16s.
